Position Description: The Borough of New Bethlehem, Clarion County, PA, is conducting a search to fill the position of Chief of Police. The department covers several municipalities within Southern Clarion and Northern Armstrong Counties. New Bethlehem Police Department currently employs three full-time, three part-time officers, and one part-time administrative position. Communities served by the police department currently include South Bethlehem, Hawthorn, Rimersburg, Sligo, Redbank Townships (Clarion and Armstrong), Mahoning Dam, Mahoning Township, East Brady, Redbank and Union School Districts.

The Chief of Police is responsible for supervising all police personnel, and will accordingly plan, schedule, coordinate, and direct their activity. The Chief of Police is also responsible for protecting the lives and property of residents and businesses, preventing crime and enforcing all applicable laws and ordinances within the coverage areas.

New Bethlehem Borough is seeking a successful candidate that has 5 to 10 years of experience, is skilled in budget development and management, is a good steward of the taxpayers’ dollar, is creative in resource development and grant seeking, an advocate for his/her department and Borough, and who utilizes progressive and innovative public safety strategies despite budgetary constraints. The candidate should have a proven track record of developing and supporting staff to achieve excellence through increased training, education, responsible productivity, morale and retention.

The successful candidate must be a skilled administrator and communicator, with good computer and public relation skills, and a relationship builder, both internally and externally; including working with other agencies, municipalities, community organizations; for profit and not for profit, social service providers and mental health services in order to leverage resources and maximize quality of life opportunities within our community.

The successful candidate must be MPOETC/Act 120 certified. Certifications in criminal and crash investigations, firearms, active shooter training, vehicle code interrogations, drug recognition, portable breath test and field sobriety testing are preferred. The successful candidate must pass physical and drug screening. A thorough background examination will be conducted.

General Information:
The Borough population is approximately 959 with about 70 businesses located in and near the downtown business district. The Redbank Valley School District’s high school/middle school and primary school are located within the Borough. SR 28/66, the Redbank Valley Trail and Red Bank Creek all pass through the Borough. The New Bethlehem Fire Company, Redbank Valley Municipal Authority, Clarion Co. Ambulance Service and U.S. Post Office all have buildings within the Borough. The Borough has a secretary, 2 full time and 2-3 part time street department and solid waste collection workers.
